Mental (Behavioral) Health & Substance Use

Everyone reacts to stress and traumatic experiences differently. While some have reactions that can be seen as normal responses to life events, others may experience signs or symptoms of more serious conditions.

Mental health and substance use conditions can affect anyone; you are not alone. The Military Health System has many resources available to help those who need it.

If you or someone you know needs support now, call or text 988 or chat at 988Lifeline.org. 988 connects you with a trained crisis counselor who can help.

Our Behavioral Health Clinic serves active-duty service members, as well as dependents on a space-available, case-by-case basis. The staff evaluates and provides treatment for a wide variety of mental health problems.

Kimbrough Substance Use Disorder Care Clinic (SUDCC)

Our facility offers the following mental health and substance use services:
  • Outpatient individual therapy
  • Outpatient group therapy
  • Self-referrals can schedule SUDCC assessment by calling 301-677-8895.
  • Civilian beneficiaries can contact TRICARE or the Fort Meade Employee Assistance Program for substance misuse referrals.
  • Command-directed referral to SUDCC should be initiated as soon as the service member's safety is secured.

Alcohol and Drug Detox

Drug and alcohol withdrawal can be life threatening. Our SUDCC does not have the resources to provide medical clearance or outpatient detox services. Service members experiencing intoxication or symptoms of withdrawal should seek immediate medical attention by calling 911 or proceeding to the nearest emergency room. If a service member appears to be under the influence at work or during the duty day, command should escort the Soldier to the Military Police Station for breathalyzer, then proceed to the nearest ER for medical clearance. Command-directed referral to SUDCC should be initiated as soon as the service member's safety is secured.

What TRICARE Covers
