Commander, MEDDAC, Fort George G. Meade

COL Darryl M. Metcalf

Colonel Darryl M. Metcalf serves as the Fort George G. Meade Medical Department Activity commander. In this capacity, he is responsible for ensuring Fort Meade MEDDAC enrolled beneficiaries receive quality, patient-centered care that allow them to maintain their readiness. The MEDDAC footprint spans across three states and the District of Columbia, comprising nine installations and 12 clinical sites.

He volunteered for military service as an Armor Crewman in 1995, serving with the 2nd Infantry Division and the U.S. Army Armor School before being selected for a Green to Gold Scholarship in 1997.COL Metcalf earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Missouri and commissioned as the Distinguished Military Graduate in 2000. He holds a Master of Science Degree from the University of Oklahoma and a Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.

COL Metcalf most recently served as the Branch Proponent Officer in the Office of the Chief of the Medical Service Corps. Prior to that he served as the Chief of Patient Administration at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. Previous assignments include: G-3/5/7 for the Medical Research and Development Command; Commander of the United States Army Center for Environmental Health Research; Chief, Managed Care and Patient Administration, Regional Health Command Europe; Research Fellow with the RAND Corporation; Director, Patient Administration, Fort Belvoir Community Hospital; and Executive Officer of the Performance Triad Task Force at the Office of the Surgeon General.

Formative assignments include: Combat Developer, Directorate of Combat and Doctrine Development; Chief, Clinical Operations, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center; Chief, Operations, 212th Combat Support Hospital; Chief, Patient Administration, Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Clinic; Company Commander, USA MEDDAC, Würzburg, DE; Medical Regulating Officer, 67th Combat Support Hospital; Executive Officer, C Company, 526th Forward Support Battalion, 101st Airborne Division, and Medical Platoon Leader, 2/502nd Infantry Battalion, 101st Airborne Division.

Combat and operational assignments include: Operation New Dawn as the Theater Medical Regulating Officer for Task Force 47 MED; Operation Iraqi Freedom as the Chief, Patient Administration, 28th Combat Support Hospital; and Operation Joint Guard (KFOR) as the Medical Platoon Leader with 2/502nd Infantry Battalion.

Awards, decorations, and honors include: the Bronze Star Medal; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Kosovo Campaign Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Ribbon; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Korea Defense Service Medal; Humanitarian Service Medal; Armed Forces Service Medal; and the NATO Kosovo Medal. He earned the Expert Field Medical Badge and the Air Assault Badge as well, and is a member of the Order of Military Medical Merit.

COL Metcalf’s professional military education include: the AMEDD Officer Basic and Advanced courses, the Command and General Staff College (ILE), the Joint Medical Planners Course, the Medical Strategic Leaders Program, and the U.S. Army War College.
